Hospital Bag Checklist
When we talk about the hospital bag, it’s usually all about the baby — and that’s totally fair. But as a first-time mom currently navigating this intense phase of uncertainty, I realized something was missing.
This day isn’t just about what the baby needs — it’s about you, too. It’s an emotional, powerful, and often stressful transition. And creating a sense of comfort, safety, and even “home” at the hospital can make all the difference — especially if you’re planning a natural birth, or aiming for one without anesthesia, so I created a Hospital Bag for Mom checklist that’s not only functional, but also nurturing. Inspired by a doula who reminded me that we, too, need support, this bag is about helping your body and mind release the oxytocin we need for labor.
What can’t be missing for YOU?
Heat therapy: A must-have to soothe your lower back during contractions. Think: a wheat or seed-filled pad, a hot water bottle, or a electric heating pad with straps to tie around your lowerback .
Nutritious snacks: Almonds, cashews, and quick-energy bites. You’ll need that fuel — trust me.
Wipes: wipes are ideal for your face, hands, or any moment where a refresh helps.
Bathroom essentials: Deodorant, ponytails, toothcare, shampoo, lip blam, face mist, brush, body lotion. You can buy an already made kit or make your own.
Fan: If you’re prone to heat waves mid-labor.
Essential oils + creams: Here are my three must-haves:
Lavender oil — to inhale or dab on your pillow for calming nerves and deep relaxation.
Peppermint oil — for a quick mental reset and nausea relief (just inhale!).
Calendula cream — unscented. for soothing sensitive skin, like nipples or intimate areas that can get a little bit irritated or , and for gentle, calming massage.
Arnica globules: A homeopathic must for some quick comfort before birth and post partum. Ask for it at a homeopathic pharmacy — they can prepare it specifically for childbirth use.
A small candle or LED tealight: helps create a cozy, relaxing atmosphere that encourages oxytocin, the hormone of love (and labor!).
A soft pajama set: Post-birth comfort is everything.
Your own pillow: Bring a beautiful, cozy one that feels like home.
Breastfeeding pillow: For support, ease, and posture in those first feeding moments.
A small speakter with your favorite Spotify playlist: Think calming, grounding, empowering — whatever works for you.
A reusable water bottle: your beloved Stanley to sip so you can drink in any position.
